President Murmu Honors Siachen Martyrs, Hails Soldiers’ Bravery Amidst Harsh Conditions

President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a significant visit to the Indian Army’s Siachen Base Camp in Ladakh on Thursday, where she paid her respects to the fallen heroes at the Siachen War Memorial. This poignant memorial is a testament to the sacrifices made by countless soldiers and officers who have laid down their lives safeguarding the Siachen Glacier since the inception of Operation Meghdoot in April 1984.

Operation Meghdoot, a landmark military operation, saw the Indian Army establish complete control over the Siachen Glacier, often referred to as the world’s highest battlefield, perched at around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram mountain range. This strategic maneuver solidified India’s presence in this critical region.

    President’s Address to the Troops

Attired in military fatigues, President Murmu addressed the troops stationed at Siachen, expressing her profound pride as the supreme commander of the armed forces. She conveyed the nation’s gratitude and admiration for their unwavering bravery and dedication.

“Since the commencement of Operation Meghdoot in April 1984, the courageous soldiers and officers of the Indian Armed Forces have steadfastly ensured the security of this region,” President Murmu remarked. She acknowledged the extraordinary challenges faced by the soldiers deployed in Siachen, highlighting the extreme weather conditions they endure.

President Droupadi Murmu visited the Siachen base camp on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

“They confront severe weather, with temperatures plummeting to minus 50 degrees Celsius. Even in the face of heavy snowfall and other adversities, they remain resolutely deployed at their posts, displaying unwavering devotion and vigilance. Their sacrifices and resilience in protecting the motherland serve as an exceptional example for all,” President Murmu stated, as conveyed in a statement released by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

    Arrival and Reception

Upon her arrival at the Thoise airfield, President Murmu was warmly received by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier BD Mishra. This visit marks a historic moment as President Murmu becomes the third President of India to grace the Siachen base camp with her presence, situated within the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Former Presidents APJ Abdul Kalam and Ram Nath Kovind had previously visited the Siachen base camp in April 2004 and May 2018, respectively. Their visits, like President Murmu’s, underscore the nation’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by the soldiers guarding this strategically vital region.

President Murmu’s visit to Siachen serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering commitment of the Indian Armed Forces to protect the nation’s borders, even in the most challenging and inhospitable terrains. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the soldiers who stand guard at the world’s highest battlefield, ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
